Next up in our series of cycling helmet reviews (following the ABUS Aventor Road Cycling Helmet - read the review here), we're putting the ABUS StormChaser to the test. This helmet, manufactured using the In-Mold process, is claimed by the manufacturer to be a versatile all-rounder among head protectors. Designed for use across various categories of modern cycling, from fast-paced road races to muddy gravel bike adventures, the StormChaser aims to perform. While its construction is similar to the Aventor, it has a distinct shape with noticeably fewer prominent ventilation openings. However, the StormChaser incorporates the so-called Forced Air Cooling Technology. Will the StormChaser live up to its name and chase every breeze? Our comprehensive review will reveal all.
The ABUS StormChaser road cycling helmet promises to provide lightweight comfort and protection for professional cyclists, both men and women. Designed to be suitable for various cycling disciplines, this versatile helmet is built to withstand the rigors of high-speed road races and challenging off-road gravel bike excursions. Featuring a unique shape and innovative construction, the StormChaser aims to deliver a top-notch performance that sets it apart from other helmets on the market.
Constructed using the advanced In-Mold process, the StormChaser combines an EPS foam interior with a durable polycarbonate outer shell, providing enhanced safety and structural integrity. Unlike the Aventor, the StormChaser features fewer ventilation openings, but it boasts the innovative Forced Air Cooling Technology, which promises to keep the wearer's head cool and comfortable even during the most demanding rides.
In our in-depth review, we'll put the ABUS StormChaser to the test, evaluating its performance, comfort, and design. We'll also explore the benefits of its unique features, such as the Forced Air Cooling Technology and how it compares to other helmets in its class. By the end of our review, you'll have a clear understanding of whether the StormChaser is the right road cycling helmet for your needs. So stay tuned as we dive into the world of the ABUS StormChaser and discover if it truly lives up to its name.
The Abus StormChaser is equipped with a padded half-ring, which means it only encircles half of the head. Unlike the Aventor, the forehead area is not perforated but instead has thicker padding. The head circumference can be easily adjusted at the back of the head using a dial, which is easily accessible and can be operated with one hand while riding, similar to most other helmet brands. The helmet feels very comfortable and airy, and even after extended rides, the StormChaser doesn't cause any pressure points or discomfort.
However, the height adjustment at the rear of the helmet is quite stiff and difficult to use. The inner padding is removable and can be hand-washed, but to do so, a slot screw in the middle of the helmet must be opened. Only then can the padded half-ring be removed. I had trouble with this process initially. Moreover, on my first StormChaser, a side brace of the inner half-ring broke after the first test ride. Fortunately, I received a replacement helmet, and I did not encounter any similar issues with the new test model. However, I found the plastic ring of the StormChaser to be quite thin and prone to breakage. 2 out of 5 points.
With the StormChaser, the scale showed a weight of 228g, which is slightly more than the manufacturer's specified weight of 220g. However, the additional 8 grams do not make a significant difference in the overall experience. The StormChaser feels extremely lightweight, making it practically unnoticeable when worn, ensuring optimal comfort during rides.
This road cycling helmet's lightweight design is a standout feature, contributing to a comfortable and enjoyable riding experience for cyclists of all levels. The minimal difference in weight from the manufacturer's specifications can be easily overlooked, considering the helmet's exceptional performance and comfort.
5 out of 5 points for the StormChaser's remarkable lightweight design and the ease it brings to the overall cycling experience.
Unlike the Aventor, the Abus StormChaser does away with individually adjustable ear and cheek straps. Instead, the loops are pre-glued in place under the ears. Initially, this fixed design might raise some skepticism, but once the helmet is worn, the system fits perfectly. The non-adjustable ear section not only saves weight but also eliminates the need for cumbersome strap adjustments and prevents any loose straps from dangling around the ears.
The chin closure on the StormChaser is the same as the Aventor, but with a significantly shorter strap that is much easier to adjust. The soft strap material ensures a comfortable fit against the skin, enhancing the overall wearing experience. This innovative closure system demonstrates how Abus has prioritized ease of use and rider comfort in the design of the StormChaser helmet.
5 out of 5 points for the StormChaser's innovative and efficient closure system that streamlines adjustments and contributes to a comfortable, secure fit for cyclists.
While the StormChaser may not have the impressive ventilation openings found in the Aventor, its Forced Air Cooling Technology effectively keeps your head cool during rides. The specific details of this unique cooling system may remain a mystery, but its effectiveness is undeniable. Generally, the StormChaser's construction is slightly less airy compared to the Aventor, but it still provides ample ventilation in various weather conditions.
Riders can enjoy a well-ventilated experience with the StormChaser, even during fast descents, where minimal cold wind is felt. The carefully designed ventilation system ensures that the helmet maintains a comfortable temperature, providing optimal performance for cyclists in different environments.
5 out of 5 points for the StormChaser's effective Forced Air Cooling Technology that delivers efficient ventilation and a comfortable riding experience, regardless of the weather or riding conditions.
Picture this: you're approaching a tunnel, and suddenly your vision is distorted due to your sunglasses. What do you do? Where do you put your glasses? The ideal solution is to quickly attach them to your helmet. The Abus StormChaser handles this scenario perfectly.
With the StormChaser, your sunglasses can easily find a secure spot in almost any ventilation slot. The helmet's design accommodates different types of eyewear arms without any issues. Removing the glasses is also a breeze. While the StormChaser doesn't have rubberized openings like some other helmets, its elongated ventilation slots are large enough to provide a parking spot for any pair of sunglasses.
The StormChaser earns a full 5 out of 5 points for its practical and versatile eyewear holder design, which makes it easy to securely attach and remove sunglasses while cycling. This feature adds to the overall convenience and functionality of the helmet, making it an excellent choice for riders who require eyewear during their rides.
The StormChaser helmet, with its somewhat compact and angular design, is well-suited for round to narrow head shapes. Its appearance makes it an excellent choice for cross-country and gravel bike riders. With an impressive selection of 25 color options, you can find a StormChaser helmet to match your personal style.
Additionally, the StormChaser features subtle reflectors on the rear, ensuring better visibility for the rider in various lighting conditions. I tested the matte black version as well as the titanium gray/black combination, both of which looked great and provided an appealing aesthetic.
The StormChaser earns a full 5 out of 5 points for its versatile appearance and practical features. Its wide range of color options and added safety features make it a top choice for cyclists seeking a helmet that is both stylish and functional. The helmet's unique design ensures it stands out on the road or trail, catering to a wide variety of riders and their individual preferences.
The Abus StormChaser is currently priced at around 100 Euros, which is a fair price for such a versatile, modern, and stylish helmet. This universally applicable helmet offers excellent value, making it a top choice for cyclists seeking a high-quality product without breaking the bank.
The StormChaser earns a perfect score of 5 out of 5 points for its affordability and features. Considering its wide range of color options, unique design, and added safety features, the helmet presents a fantastic investment for any cyclist. This price point makes the StormChaser an attractive option for both casual riders and professional cyclists alike, providing a great balance of style, comfort, and performance at a competitive price.
The ABUS StormChaser is a modern road bike helmet that impresses with its excellent ventilation and lightweight design. The helmet offers exceptional comfort, and its innovative, flap-free ear straps fit perfectly. However, the helmet's slightly wobbly height adjustment and delicate plastic inner ring detract from its overall score. The fact that the inner ring broke on my first helmet is considered a one-time production error and does not factor into the evaluation.
The StormChaser stands out as a top choice for riders seeking a high-performance helmet with a sleek design and advanced features. Its superb ventilation system, lightweight construction, and comfortable fit make it an ideal choice for cyclists of all levels. Although there are minor concerns regarding the helmet's height adjustment and inner ring durability, these issues do not overshadow the overall positive aspects of this exceptional helmet. Cyclists looking for a reliable and stylish road bike helmet will find the ABUS StormChaser to be a fantastic option.
