When it comes to selecting outdoor gear, we've already analyzed and tested a wide range of backpacks for enduring long hauls in the bicycle saddle. Up to this point, our focus has been on gear designed for epic full-day tours in the saddle. Now, our attention is drawn to the shorter, but no less important, after-work tours. These tours, often lasting less than three hours, require a different kind of gear, particularly when it comes to backpacks. A large backpack can often be seen as unnecessary and burdensome on such short rides.
Therefore, we are thrilled that Deuter, a renowned outdoor gear manufacturer, has developed the Road ONE backpack. This backpack is minimalist and aerodynamic in design and despite its name, which brings road cycling to mind, it should also deliver excellent performance on mountain bike tours. Deuter Road ONE is the smallest backpack in the Deuter range, and we are curious whether it has the potential to become an everyday companion on forest and meadow tours. With this review, we aim to find out if the Deuter Road ONE backpack not only meets the requirements of short after-work tours but also the demands of mountain bike enthusiasts.
First of all, I misused the Deuter Road One a bit. In principle, the backpack is specially designed for use on a racing bike. However, I mainly needed it for short mountain bike rides in the nearby forest. Especially for short trips I need a light backpack that only fits the most necessary equipment (pump, mini tool, tire levers, first aid kit, spare inner tube and energy bars). A saddlebag is too small for that. The 15l. Touring backpack too big again.
So this time the Deuter Road One will be examined more closely.

The Deuter Race One backpack provides you with effective organization of your gear and accessories for short to medium-length mountain bike, road bike, and gravel bike tours. Featuring a generous main compartment further divided into a smaller pocket, it allows you to securely store items such as keys and tire levers. An additional small mesh inner pocket offers you the perfect spot for a spare tube. On the left side, you'll find a dedicated compartment for your bike pump or CO2 cartridges. Your first aid kit, rain jacket, and energy bars can comfortably fit into the main compartment.
However, if you're planning to carry an additional water bladder, you may need to compromise on some larger items, as overpacking might prevent the zipper from closing. But not to worry, the organization of the Deuter Race One backpack seems thoughtfully structured to make your ride as enjoyable as possible. A unique addition is the sunglasses loop on the shoulder straps. But caution is advised as your glasses can easily slip out of the loop. Regardless of this minor detail, the Deuter Race One backpack earns almost the full score of 4.8 out of 5 points for its well-considered organization. So, when you're hitting the trail, the Deuter Race One has got your back in terms of storage and organization, ensuring you have a smooth ride every time.
